SaferGlobe Finland

SaferGlobe Finland is a research network founded in 2010. We act in Finland. Our goal is to enhance the public understanding of international relations and security policy based on the concept of human security by producing academic research in these fields. We offer practically oriented publications for NGOs, state institutions, decision-makers, the media, and private persons interested in these topics.

We seek to fill the gap, which lies between the academic and non-academic writers. Therefore we focus on themes, in which applied research is scarce but which is constantly being needed to help in the political decision-making process and to provide support in the activities of NGOs.

We are independent and directed by board and Scientific Advisory board. Our finance came from membership fees, donations and research grants.

RESEARCH
Our field is peace and conflict research, which is interdisciplinary in nature. Our three main topics are:
a) The causes and consequences of violent conflicts as well as the resolving and transforming of them.
b) Disarmament and weapon trade.
c) Conflict journalism.

We carry out annually several research projects. Please, see the list of our publications. Additionally, we publish the monthly Beyond Horizon column on peace and security related themes.

THE RESEARCH NETWORK
Our fundamental idea is to offer peacemakers tools to combine academic knowledge with creative solutions to prevent conflicts and manage crises. Therefore, we believe that quality research can make a difference in decision-making. The members of our network may contribute to write articles and small scale reports. Additionally, we offer diverse activities for people active in the field of peace and conflict research. We organize, for example, annual research days for deep-going discussions concerning international relation, conflicts, peace and security. We also have a training programme for young professionals.  Our activities follow three principles:

1. As a Finnish organization, we publish our results in the Finnish languages – Finnish, Swedish, and the Sami language. When needed we translate publications.
2. The membership and activity in our organization is based on voluntarity. We offer, however, also internships and employment whenever necessary and possible.
3. Peacebuilding is a profession, which requires deep understanding on conflicts based on education and experience. Therefore, we seek to further professionalize the field by training old and becoming experts.
